Part 6: Warm Embrace

Devolo upper building

After leaving the dungeon, Perry navigated a few halls and braced himself as a club-wielding Mamodo charged toward him. However, Pochi sprung out of the floor and blew the Mamodo back, the gamer landing on his chest to shoot with a rifle. “Pochi!” Perry exclaimed.

“Hey, Pear! Everything going well?”

“I got a little sidetracked, so I wouldn’t know. I need to get up to the top!”

“Follow me! I think I know the way.”

Perry spared some proud smiles to all the operatives in combat on the way up. Momon had been set aflame after Veronica’s bouncing fireballs landed on him, the rabbit running about in panic. Jasmine and Frasmine were just finishing their own bouts outside the entrance to the highest building. “I hope you weren’t on an ice cream break, Perry!” Frasmine joked. “We were just about to finish without you.”

“The GKND ran up here, right?” Perry ran into the entrance, only to remember the stairs were destroyed. “Crud! Think any of you can give me a lift?”

“It’s hard not being able to fly, is it?” a familiar voice asked.

A dark-skinned, monochrome-haired boy lowered from the sky. “Star! Were you just gonna stay up there and let us do everything??”

“I mean, I heard you fell into a hole, so somebody had to keep tabs on everybody. If you’d like a report, your operatives have taken out two more of the Elite 10. Christina and Isabelle are coming up the trail, and Jason, Max, Mika, and Gabriel are fighting three other Tens, between them. I need to save my chi in case we’ll need to finish any battles.”

“Sector JP is taking care of another of the Ten. And, with the three beaten before, uh…” Perry needed to work out the math for a moment; keeping track of so many events was hard. “…That means there’s one more Elite who’s unaccounted for. Unless Milordo himself counts. Ugh, Star, just help me up there! I need to help Leila!”

“You still trust that girl?” Frasmine asked.

“Milordo was threatening her, Frasmine! He’s manipulating all of them! Just get me up!”

“Who was the High Leader again?” Star remarked. “I’m getting started, just calm down.” He simply opened a portal leading to the top of the stairs. After Perry ran through, Star sealed it and floated to join him.

The dim chamber was only lit by a blue ray of light shining onto one spot. Tiffi deduced this ray was Moon Chi, and Leila would run under it every minute for a recharge. It would certainly benefit Tiffi as well in countering her shared element.

Leila created several moons to spin about the air, hiding on one of them to confuse Tiffi. The Lunarian evaded whichever ones targeted her, seizing them in her own bending to throw at others. One of her lucky shots knocked Leila onto the ground, allowing Tiffi to stab a crescent into her. Leila pushed up, and seeing Tiffi shoot a Lunar Beam, Leila shot one of her own to intercept it. Leila’s persevered against Tiffi’s and blasted the star-spectacled girl on her back. Leila quickly made more moons to cuff Tiffi’s limbs to the floor, barely pulling free in time before she tanked another beam. Tiffi ran to Leila and threatened to shoot a beam, the Mamodo forming a shield in preparation, but Tiffi threw some Lunar Flames along the ground and under the shield, burning Leila’s legs. Leila made a Low-G Leap and fired a Moonball down, striking Leila directly.

Byonko hopped high and far from Goombria and Nyoro, stretching his arms to grab the Goomba. They were stunned by this technique and had no time to react as Byonko swung Goombria around a great radius. She hurdled her back to Nyoro, who had arms open for her friend and took the knockback as a result. Byonko hopped above them and spewed a stream of green bubbles. Soaked in the slime, the girls slipped in trying to stand back up. Nyoro grabbed an ink gun and shot the ground, making a nice pool to submerge and rid the slip, but Byonko had stretched his fists above them for an incoming slam. Seeing this, Tiffi ran to hold the fist back with a brief barrier that was shattered in one hit, but Tiffi was open to a string of crescents from Leila.

“LEILA!” A flying shield knocked Leila’s wand out of her hand.

“Perry! Star!” the aliens exclaimed in surprise.

“Gero?! How did you make it out of that dungeon?! Belgim should’ve been guarding the way out!” Byonko shouted.

“Leila, you don’t need to fight, anymore. I’ll take Milordo-Z down this time, believe me.”

“N-Nuh-uh! You only made things worse! Milordo only gave me a weak dose of moonlight.” Leila rushed back under the ray. “I can only stay free for a few minutes! If I get away from this moonlight, I’m done for!”

“Leila, it’s all a lie! You were never gonna turn back to stone!”

“Yes I will! Don’t you see?” Leila stuck a hand outside, and in her vision, it slowly petrified. “If I don’t stop you guys, I’ll never get to be free!”

“Leila, nothing’s happening! Milordo brainwashed all of you! None of the Mamodo we captured turned back into stone! They’re just comatose because they think they did! But you won’t! You have to trust me!”

“I don’t wanna!!” Leila spun and made a practical merry-go-round of moons, sending the spinning crescents at them, but Tiffi jumped in the way to help shield from the attacks. “You even brought that guy with you! The grandson of the one who turned us all to stone!”

“M-Me?!” Star asked in shock.

“Go away!” Leila cast more moons. “You’re gonna change us back, aren’t you?!”

“No, I’m not!” Star evaded the moons, but knew it wouldn’t be right to fight back. “P-Perry?”

“Star, just go back outside. Just let me talk to her myself.”

“I probably should…” Star returned to the entrance.

“That makes this easier!” Byonko spewed a glob of slime, sticking them to the ground. Nyoro drew a Splat Brella; an umbrella shield ink gun. She had the shield launch toward the duo, Byonko shooting his tongue to hold it back, but its ink trail soaked his tongue and forced him to rescind it. Perry and Tiffi were soaked by ink, but freed of the slime, splitting up to dodge Leila’s next attack.

“Leila, Milordo used a strange power to brainwash you. You’re not going to become stone. You can be free! Just walk out of that light and you’ll see!”

“You’re lying…you’re lying! Huh?!” The area around her dimmed.

“If children won’t cooperate, sometimes you have to make them.” Tiffi said, using her bending to hold up the moonlight.

“STOP! GIVE IT BACK!” Leila desperately fired moons at Tiffi, who dodged while keeping the light elevated.

“Leila, it’s okay!” Perry ran to her and lightly touched her shoulder. “Look at—OW!” A Moonerang forced him back.

“Stay away from me!” Leila trained her wand on him, eyes watering. “You don’t know what it’s like… to be alone, powerless, forgotten… Always screaming for help, but nobody can hear you. Nobody’s around to hear you. Milordo-Z gave us back our freedom… but we…”

“But you don’t have to fight, anymore. You don’t need to work for him.” Perry approached her slowly. “Leila, you’re not turning to stone. See? Look at yourself… you’re just fine.”

No, she wasn’t just fine… Couldn’t he see? She was freezing up to her torso. Any moment, she would go back into that tablet… trapped forever again. But, as Perry folded his hands over hers, she felt a warmth. “Just take a breath. Keep breathing and tell yourself that you’re alright.”

“Huff…huff…” Those hands became stone… but she could still feel his touch. Her neck became stone… she felt her breath faltering… but she kept breathing. “huff…huff…huff…huff…” She could feel nothing when she was stone… so, why could she feel these things now? Why could she feel the warmth in her hands, the breath in her lungs… or the tears on her face? “I’m alright…I’m alright…I’m…all right.” Leila sank to her knees, Perry supporting her.

“Yeah… you are alright.”

“No she isn’t!” Byonko stretched a punch at Perry, denied by his shield, and Tiffi threw a Moonerang to thwart a roundabout swing of his other arm. Byonko was rammed in the back by Goombria’s headbonk, followed by an Ink Bomb from Nyoro. “I won’t let you betray Milordo-Z! Gigano Ribbisto!” The frog grew to a giant size, spewing a waterfall of slime. Perry and Leila became drenched in the slime while Tiffi Low-G Leapt away from its flow.

“Goombria, I think it’s time.” Nyoro declared, extracting a large, handheld cannon from her Infi-Cube. “Hurry! Like we practiced!”

“I’m ready!” Goombria hopped in the cannon’s hole.

Nyoro inserted a brown game controller with a point on top into a matching slot on the cannon. This controller was her prized Weenifier, but in reverse, it would serve a new purpose. “Commencing Wumbofication!” The controller shot a red ray up at Goombria. She wouldn’t expect Byonko to stay still long enough for the shrink ray, but this tactic was the next best thing. The gigantification would only be brief, so this cannon would provide a brief burst of momentum. By the time Byonko turned toward them, “and FIRE!”

Goombria was launched the moment her size was blown up, ramming Byonko with a Super Headbonk! The Goomba’s naturally hardened head knocked the frog dizzy, collapsing on his front. Goombria shrank back to her natural little size, but Byonko would shrink as well, along with his pool of slime. “Gerooooog…go!” Perry pinned his shield atop him.

“Hey, little guy! I need to ask you a quick question: what’s Milordo’s real name?”

“I’ll never tell you that…gero!”

“His… real name?” Leila moaned.

“Why do you need to know that?” asked Tiffi, supporting the former.

“I know he used a magic spell to hide his true name and increase his brainwashing power. I wanna know what it is!”

“I’ll take it to my grave, gero…”

“Hey… when Milordo’s mask fell off… I sorta recognized him.” Leila moaned. “He looked like a Mamodo… from a noble family that used to be around. And their leader was Zofis.”

“So, his name is Milordo… Zofis? Does that mean he’s 1,000 years old, too?”

“He looked a lot younger than the Zofis from back then.”

“If he’s from the same family, maybe he inherited the name.” Tiffi shrugged.

“N-no! That’s not it at all!” Byonko panicked. “He wouldn’t be given such a predictable name!”

“So, it is, then?” Perry asked.

“NUH-UH! IT’S NOT! And you’ll never guess what-”

Nyoro gave him a few rounds of ink and KO’ed the froggy. “I think you have the answer, Perry.” The Inkling smiled.

“Hey, something’s coming!” Frasmine alerted his sister and Star to a shooting star soaring from the valley.

“Hey, that’s one of the Elite 10!” Jasmine yelled. “But who’s riding him?”

“YAHOOOOOO!” The tan-skinned, raccoon boy was unmistakable. Pamoon came for a swift landing with Mason’s arms and legs wrapped around his torso. “Mates, take a look at my cool new ride!”

“I’m not your personal jet!” Pamoon shouted.

“Now, next destination: Milordo-Z!”

“Leila!” Rejecting his order, Pamoon pushed Jason off and flew into the temple. He quickly bypassed the fallen stairs and flew into the dim-lit room.

“Whoa!” Perry gasped. “Who’s…”

“Pamoon!”

“Leila!” The star-borg raced to her side. “You look hurt!”

“It’s alright… I’m alright. Pamoon… Milordo-Z was tricking us all this time. We were never gonna change back. But we…we have no homes to go back to, don’t they?”

“No, I’m sure you do.” Perry said. “If Milordo’s family is still around… maybe you guys do, too. I mean, I can’t really be sure, but you guys should still have a homeworld.”

“But what’s even become of Mamon?” Pamoon wondered. “And… why is Milordo trying to restart an old war?”

“Why don’t we go ask him? Where is he, anyway?”

“The Moon Stone chamber is just up there.” Pamoon faced up at the light hole.

“Can you fly me up? …I mean, I’m assuming you’re open to changing sides, hehe.”

“Yes…” Pamoon answered with a smirk. “I am.”

Grinning, Perry hopped on the cyborg’s back. “Get some rest, Leila! I’ll be back in a jiffy!”

“Perry, wait!” Leila shouted. “I…be careful up there. Milordo isn’t the only one you should worry about.”

“What do you…! Wait! I almost forgot there’s one more Elite 10 we haven’t seen, yet!”

“Yeah… the strongest of the 100 Mamodo warriors is Demolt. He’s a scary monster that even the Irkens were scared of. We haven’t seen him much since this whole thing started. He could be up there now.”

“Maybe we should wait for more backup.” Goombria suggested.

“They’ll get here when they can.” Perry said. “But I ain’t giving Lordo time to prepare. So, Leila… just wait for me.” The shooting star soared up through the opening, the golden light glistening in Leila’s hopeful eyes.

In no time, they landed in the upper chamber, the Moon Stone shining above them. “So, where’s-” Perry stepped off and walked forward.

“AAAAGH!” A fireball struck Pamoon dead on, exploding and turning Pamoon into a charred mess. “PAMOON!” His armor was brutally dented and in pieces, yet a faint flicker of life sparked in his irises.

“I can’t stand traitors.” Milordo hissed, approaching from behind. “It infuriates me when you’ve spent so long working together, only for someone to throw all that work away! Sure, I only knew them for a week, but I would think-” Perry threw his shield, Milordo dodging and rupturing the ground to keep Perry at bay. “And what pisses me off more is little brats who try to RUIN those plans AND CUT OFF A HAND!”

Perry leapt through the smoke for a jump slash, grazing him just by the tip before having to evade a blast. “Your name is Zofis, right?!”

“AAACK!” A flicker of aura left Zofis’s body. “CURSE YOU! How did you learn that?! Did you torture Byonko?!”

“What’s your deal?! Are you a Mamodo? Why are you making your people fight?! Who are you working for?!”

“You’re just full of questions, aren’t you? Fine. For the sake of our dying friend here, I’ll tell him what he’s been fighting for. It wasn’t the Irken Empire… it was the Vilgaxian Empire!”

“Vil…what?”

“The Vil Galaxy. Sound familiar?”

“Uh…no?”

“Shows what living in a backwater galaxy will teach you. The Vil Galaxy have essentially picked up what the Irkens abandoned. But only recently have they acquired the resources to wage war on the universe. This was, in part, thanks to my father, who swore allegiance to Emperor Vilgax.”

“So, what? Is your homeworld under their control?”

“Unfortunately, no. Several years after the Irkens landed there, the Mamodo constructed a means to hide their planet’s presence from the universe, effectively banishing the Irkens. It has remained secluded ever since. Alas, my once-noble family fell into poverty, and to rise from that poverty, we turned to villainy and waged war on the other clans. But, 5 years ago, we were defeated, rounded up, and ejected from the planet’s atmosphere. Now, even we can’t reenter our world. I was 9 years old at the time. Stripped away from everything but my wretched family and my pet frog, Byonko. We were found by the Vilgaxians, who were fascinated by us after learning of our backgrounds. The Vilgaxians possessed archives once owned by their old friends, the Irkens… and it was through them, we learned what became of the ancient warriors. Those 100 lithographs were collected over the eons and displayed in museums. So, I made the proposal to collect these warriors, free them from their prison, and manipulate them into serving us.”

“And why attack Earth?”

“Because any would-be conqueror knows the infamy of this planet’s KND. Though, I guess that infamy attributes more to your predecessors. You’re quite fresh off the burner, aren’t you?”

“Yeah, but your warriors still weren’t a match for us! You wouldn’t have stood a chance against our parents! Even IF they’re always disappearing!”

“Disappearing?”

“Eh…never mind that.” Perry had heard this from other friends, but between them and his own, several of the parents would always leave somewhere at random times. They weren’t going shopping ’cause they didn’t come back with groceries. It made Perry curious, but it never became anything of concern.

“And so, to prove my worth to the empire, I would command these Mamodo, destroy the KND, and afterwards submit this planet to my control! I was entrusted the Trauma-Trauma Fruit to accomplish this. And it was how I planned to complete my master plan: after destroying the KND, I would broadcast the news of their deaths to the entire planet. Using the Moon Stone to enhance my Trauma power, I would take the devastation of the civilians, of all children and parents who looked up to the KND, and bend them to my will! This world would be under my thumb, and the Ancient Mamodo would enforce my rule! And I would have succeeded by now… if those IDIOTS had done their jobs and KILLED your puny operatives!”

Milordo dodged Perry’s predictable slash. “Do you understand what you’re doing?!” the Mamodo asked. “By making an enemy of me, you’re an enemy of Emperor Vilgax! Your victory will be short-lived!”

“There are plenty more operatives out there. If your empire wants to pick a fight, we’ll give ’em one. And we’re gonna make a ton more friends once your power wears off!”

“Not if you take my name to your GRAVE!” (Play “Black Doom” from Shadow the Hedgehog!)

Perry ran from a wall of booms Zofis sent around him, the Mamodo afterwards lashing an energy whip at Perry, who backflipped in time. The smoke cleared as Perry ran to his foe, Zofis taking to the air. He threw a single Burstball at Perry, who bounced it back with a Shield Bash. Zofis slapped it back, and the ball would fly faster between their back-and-forth. Can’t be a Hero of Time without this classic gimmick. An annoyed Zofis decided to dodge the boom, but Perry whipped out his Hookshot and yanked Zofis down, landing a few swift blows to the Modo. Zofis slapped the ground, Perry leaping from the boom. Zofis swung a whip in a horizontal arch, and after ducking it, Perry threw his shield to trip the lord. He was open to a quick cut before Zofis burst an Explo-Shield; a swirling barrier of solid fire.

Perry fell on his back, hurriedly rolling rightward when Zofis sent a line of booms. Zofis flew farther away and conjured a large Burstball, sending the mass of black and dark-pink at Perry slowly. Though he might regret this, he tried to Shield Bash it, and it did bounce backward. Zofis willed it to home back on Perry, but he simply kept this up and stepped closer to Zofis. Eventually, Perry threw his sword through the sphere, running far back enough to avoid the massive boom. Remembering Zofis’ location, he chucked his shield through the smoke and struck him in the chest. Zofis flew overhead and threw more Burstballs at Perry, who dodged and took cover in the smoke. Holding his breath, he watched for the glow of other Burstballs, dodging them, and afterwards shooting the Hookshot to where the balls seemed to come from. Once Zofis was brought down, Perry grabbed and slammed him to the ground, afterwards leaping from his Explo-Shield. Perry ran to recover his shield, but cringed embarrassedly as Zofis claimed his sword. Shoulda figured that could happen. Man, I wish Dad would let me have the bow!

Zofis channeled chi through the sword and lashed his whip with greater ferocity, each impact to the ground causing a boom. Flying far away, he channeled a greater surge of power and fired a spiraling pinkish beam. Perry couldn’t run as the beam tracked his direction, so he raised his shield in the hopes it would hold up. Perry was forced into the wall and charred by the laser, the leader forcing himself to stay standing. “Let’s see how YOU like to be stabbed!” Zofis flew furiously with the sword aimed forth, but Perry positioned his shield just in time to make the sword curve off. Zofis, stunned by the sudden misdirection, would ram his head into the shield, his speed mixed with the impact dizzying him. Perry limped away and quickly reached into his cube, grabbing a specially-made, energy-restoring Red Kool-Aid. It wouldn’t heal his wounds, but it pumped him with the drive to keep moving!

Zofis stretched a whip from the Gilded Sword and tried for more lashes, Perry keeping his shield ready. Each explosive blow rattled Perry’s bones, but he survived without pain. Part of him was trying to pull off a Perfect Guard, but he couldn’t muster the right focus and motion to do it. Perry tried to surprise him by shooting his Hookshot, but was denied by an Explo-Shield. But, remembering the trick with Leila, Perry tried something similar by crouching and shooting his Hookshot at Zofis’ ankle. Zofis couldn’t see the tactic through the shield, so he wound up caught and pulled against his own shield. Zofis fell on his back, the shield disabling as Perry lunged to reclaim his sword. He dealt a quick slash as compensation before Zofis escaped.

Zofis flew across the room and began to throw multiple large Burstballs. The wall collapsed behind him as Perry evaded the balls, thinking it unwise to bounce them into each other with his shield. As he maneuvered closer, Perry took a bold move and threw his sword again, prompting Zofis into dodging, but Perry quickly jumped between him and the last ball and Shield Bashed it. “!!” Zofis had no time to react as the bomb boomed against him. “Cough…heh…a snot-nosed kid… making a fool out of me?!”

“So, 5 years ago, you were 9 years old… so, you’re 14 now? Haha, you’re just like the teens from the old stories!”

“Hey, hey, Couso!” Perry faced the wall that was blown open. Star had allowed Christina, Isabelle, Laruta, Jas, and Fras to float level with the chamber. “What the heck were those fireworks we saw outside? You didn’t already win before I got here, did ya?”

“That’s Milordo-Z!” Jasmine exclaimed. “And they both look really injured…”

“Heh…we were just wrapping up.” Perry smirked. “Weren’t we… Zofi?”

“Hnn…zifififi.” Zofis snickered. “What does it matter if you defeated me? I’m far below… the strongest Mamodo in this castle!”

“You don’t mean…?!”

“DEMOLT! PULL THE STONE UP, NOW!”

“YES, MY LORD.”

An ominous voice shook the chamber and sent a chill through the children. The giant blue gem began to rise through the ceiling, Zofis floating after it. “Oh, Demolt, you’re so big and strooooong!”

“YES, MY LORD.”

“With your ultra-strong power, we’ll crumble every last kid in this castle! Zifififi!”

“YES, MY LORD.”

“Yes, My Lord, YES, My Lord, CAN’T YOU SAY ANYTHING ELSE?!”

“NO, MY LORD!”

“Hey, Pamoon…” Perry crawled to the broken cyborg. “Are you… gonna be okay?”

“Good thing about this body is… I don’t feel much pain. I’ve been broken before, so…nngh. I’ll be fine… just go up and stop him.”

“Hey, can one of you take him to the Gilligans or someone? Mechanics are practically doctors for robots.”

“Nyoro’s just downstairs.” Star said. “I’ll call her group up.”

“In the meantime,” Laruta jogged up, “you could stand a small treatment yourself!”

“Yeah… gotta get in shape to fight that Demolt thing.”

“As High Supreme Leader, I order you to rest.” Star stated. “We’ll take it from here.”

“I smell a big boy up there.” Christina smirked, cracking her knuckles. “Don’t worry, Pear, your big cous will clean up after ya.”

“Ha ha ha…” Perry may be the leader, but he was far from the strongest kid. For once, being showed up by his big cousin wasn’t so embarrassing. “Fine, but you can’t stop me from watching.”

“Hope ya don’t mind us sharin’ a piece of the cake.” Jasmine said.

“Anything for my fiery protégé!”

The wall that was blown open had a convenient, secret stairway outside. The band of operatives, with Lar and Isabelle supporting Perry, trekked up the stairs. Clouds had covered the sky, casting an unsettling, chilling wind. The uppermost chamber of the temple was open to the outside, a ring of pillars supporting a roof with an orbed structure. Said structure is what housed the hanging Moon Stone. “YEEK!”

They were forcefully compelled to let out a yelp seeing the demon that awaited: huge and muscular, Demolt bore red skin with massive bat wings, furry black legs with beast claws, and horns protruding from his head and pointed forward. He had armor on his shoulders, pointed arm plates, and viciously sharp teeth. “FINALLY! I’ve been waiting for a good meal ALL DAY… and these kids smell much spicier than those other kids I crunched.”

“This was the monster that tore down three treehouses!” Perry remembered. “He…he’s huge!”

“Back in the day, Demolt was the Crazed Warrior Berserker!” Zofis announced. “The strongest Ancient Mamodo, his power tops mine at Level 7,000!”

“SEVEN THOUSAND?! …Well, does Demolt know he doesn’t need the Moon Stone to stay free?! Does he know he doesn’t have to follow your orders?!”

“I don’t care who I work for… I don’t care where I am! All I want is destruction… to tear down everything in my path! And Milordo-Z has promised lots of destruction under the Vil Galaxy’s rule.”

“Well then, you’re just my type!” Christina shrugged. “No need to hold back against a jerk. You, Star?”

“You won’t see any sympathy from me.” The Zathurian levitated, hands lit with stars.

“Well, look, Demolt… it’s the GKND leader. The descendant of the very one who imprisoned you. Bon appétit, zifififi!”

“Thanks, My Lord.”

“I CALL FIRST DIBS!” Christina rocketed to the height of Demolt’s head and flew to greet him with a burning fist—the monster swiped his hand and swat her away. Christina slammed into a pillar, left dazed by the force. “It might be better to keep a safe distance.” Star flew around the beast and riddled him with Starbursts, Demolt defending with his arm plates. Star opened a portal that would shoot stars at the back of Demolt’s head, the beast growling at the mild irritation. He leapt at Star directly and slashed his arm-blade, the Zathurian dodging. Demolt felt a growing heat on his behind and lashed his devil tail at whoever was responsible. Jasmine dodged forward and between his legs, attracting the beast’s attention. Demolt leapt for a jump-stab, but Star caught the tip of his blade through a portal, meant to stab Demolt’s forehead… but his aim was misdirected a few inches up. An aggro Demolt spun and whipped Star away with a wing, sweeping his tail to knock Jasmine away also. “GROAR!” His left foot was stabbed by a pointed Ice Hammer.

“Bigger enemies have a hard time watching small targets!” Frasmine remarked, dodging Demolt’s fist. The icebender fled and shot icicles from a distance, but Demolt aimed one of his blades and shot it, surprising Fras as he fell off his feet. Demolt shot the next one, but Star blocked it with a Space Block. Demolt simply willed the plates to return to his arms, but growled in frustration as Star warped himself and Fras away. Demolt felt a forceful impact to his spine, courtesy of Christina’s foot. “Didn’t think I was out, did ya?!” She kicked upward, over Demolt’s head, and burned a stream of fire along his face. She boosted downward to dodge his grip, but suffered a kick as a result. With the fire blotting his vison, Jasmine lunged at his stomach as a Burning Drill, grazing into the beast before retreating.

Frasmine crashed down onto Demolt’s tail with an Ice Hammer, the beast howling as he flung Fras away afterward, but as he turned to shoot his arm blade, Star stretched a long portal to catch it and shoot it into Demolt’s face. Growing a bit too irritated, Demolt ripped off his other blade and linked them both into a triple nun-chuck, with an extra middle segment. Demolt lashed the giant blades wildly, the kids hastily retreating behind the pillars. Demolt slashed the pillars down, but the kids had already flown onto the rim above the pillars. Star poked his head through a portal on Demolt’s left, “Helloooo,” prodding the Mamodo into swinging. Star bailed, and the nun-chuck slammed into the slanted ceiling, causing cracks to spread. Memorizing Demolt’s approximate position, Christina kicked away from the roof, boosted forth, and “HYAH!” forced a chunk of rubble out to crash onto Demolt’s head. As he stumbled backward, Frasmine ran in froze the floor at his feet, Demolt falling on his rump. Frasmine froze the left foot while Star encased the other in a Space Block, halting his efforts to stand. Christina and Jasmine rocketed in from the side and dealt a severe burn to his tail.

Demolt stood back up and lashed his nun-chunk wildly, a blunt side striking Jasmine and blowing her away. “SIS!” Frasmine skied to her side.

“Ay’m… in… a lot-a pain, Fras. May need ta… sit down for a pint.”

Demolt would show no mercy as he stormed at them and slammed the nun-chuck down. Fortunately, a barrier spawned to protect them: as opposed to the Space Block’s pale-yellow glow, it was blue. “MIKA!” Perry cheered.

“We’re just in time!” Mika assumed. “And good news, Mali’s safe, too! You can thank that guy for his cooperation.”

“GORM!” Zofis flew down from the gem, seeing the black Mamodo lain exhausted beside Gabriel. “Did you bring them back here?!”

“(Er, let me explain, Milordo-Z! I had this dream where I was petrified, but I woke up, and then these two showed me some pretty pictures and-)”

Demolt hurdled his nun-chuck and pierced Gorm down the middle. “AAAH!!” Gabriel panicked. “YOU JUST KILLED HIM! WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU?!”

“Milordo says it’s good to kill traitors. And now I get more prey!”

While Mika attempted to strangle Demolt with psychic, and Star burst Blocks by his stomach, Gabriel flew to paint grease-colored paint on the nun-chucks segments. Demolt shook free and swat the flyers away, afterwards summoning his nun-chuck back, but his attempts to swing it would end in failure as it slipped out of his grasp. “Christina, hold still a moment!” Gabriel warped behind the Uno and painted her with a flame design.

“YO, I feel like a hot rod!” Tall flames ignited Christina, launching toward Demolt. The beast faced her as his right shoulder armor became a cannon, shooting a cylindrical ammo. Christina barely dodged it before landing a fired-up kick to Demolt’s pelvis. However, the cylinder had struck the ground close to Gabriel and bounced him into a pillar. As he was still recovering from the previous battle, the artist was down. Christina then kick-boosted upward and aimed for Demolt’s jaw, but his horns became antler-shields to absorb her punch, and Chris was swat away immediately. Mika pelted Demolt’s back with Psy-Spheres, prodding the beast into trying to swat her. Mika simply flew near the ceiling, so Demolt extracted his left shoulder cannon. Another cylinder shot out, but Mika’s psychic seized it just in time. It came frighteningly fast, and it had almost pressed Mika into the ceiling as she slowed it. Demolt braced his guard for her rebound, but instead, Mika shot it toward Star, who had a portal ready. The other end opened behind Demolt, bending his back in with his own bullet.

Frasmine froze the floor before Demolt, Star slammed Starbursts at his legs, and Mika flew beside him to add an extra push. Demolt flipped onto his back and was slid across the ice, falling off the edge and to the lower layer of the temple. “Ha ha! He doesn’t look as menacing down there!” Mika laughed. “Like a tiger in a cage! Wanna just rain attacks down until he passes out?”

“You know he has wings, right?” Star inquired.

“HUR!” Demolt folded the wings in as he surged power through them. “Huuuuur…RAH!” Spreading them back to life, Demolt shot skyward with such speed that the wind blew them down. He did a U-turn and returned to the battleground. Star formed a few Blocks, not expecting to actually stop him, but timing them to burst just as Demolt’s head reached them. His speed blew them down regardless and tore down more pillars supporting the roof, cutting through to the other side before returning to the sky. The cloudy heavens began to pour rain as if it feared the demon as well. “Well, Star, I guess it’s up to us flyers now.”

“Not necessarily.” Star pressed a remote. “I think we can afford to save a bit of chi.” A black, car-like ship with a comet design flew and parked beside them. “Hop in, Mika!” The psychic bounced in the extra seat, leaving Star to drive them skyward. Demolt flew headfirst, the lasers from the craft doing little to deter him. Star curved down and under him, but Demolt made a quick turn to pursue. Boosting to keep up with them, a violet flame covered his outreached fist. “He’s a firebender, too?!”

“Hnnnn…!” Mika stood and turned, struggling to push him back. “How can that big guy move so fast?! Well, I haven’t tried this, yet.” She pulled her camera and flashed at Demolt, blowing up an illusion of a glacier. Demolt boldly burst straight through, though was dumbfounded by its lack of mass and compelled to slow down. Mika leapt out and rammed him with a Psy-Shield, bouncing over him to strike the wings. Mika flew from Demolt as Star returned to catch her, Demolt resuming pursuit. “That’s not going to work on me twice!”

“We’ll see about that!” Mika flashed the camera again, stunning Demolt with a freezeframe of this very rainy sky, the droplets still and floating. However, the car disappeared, the beast searching for its whereabouts. However, Mika had landed on his back and tried to bend his wings back in. Demolt growled and furiously tried to roll her off, but she was stubbornly attached as the beast steadily sank. Demolt reached back to slap her, though Mika jumped off and under his front while Star rammed his car into his back, applying a Space Block as a buffer. Mika, staying level under him, gripped Demolt’s head and tugged down. Demolt couldn’t reach Mika in this position, but he began to bash Star’s car. It grew heavily damaged after two punches, so Star abandoned the car before the third punch. He regained control of himself as Mika flew in front.

Demolt chased the Filipino, but was flashed by her camera, seeing a mountain incoming. He snickered, not about to be deceived—his face smashed into the all-too-real mountainside that was behind Devolo Ruins. The beast came for a crash-landing along the top of the temple. “Gah, darn it!” Christina protested, recovering her stamina by stuffing herself with spicy meat. “I didn’t get the final hit!”

“DEMOLT! NO! GET UP NOW!” Milordo demanded.

“Looks like your top warrior wasn’t being attentive.” Laruta remarked. “It’s over, Lordo!”

“Demolt! Don’t let these runts embarrass you! Don’t let them embarrass ME! In front of VILGAX! You’re my last hope! Wake up! Wake up and destroy them!”

“Hah…hah…” The beast pushed up onto his knees. “AAAAAAAHHH!”

“Ho HO, still got some fire, huh?” Chris smirked. “Good, I wasn’t satisfied!”

“Get your priorities straight!” Laruta yelled.

“BERSERKER… FURYYYY!” A layer of green armor with yellow lines formed along his arms, top torso, and horns. Mika and Star pelted the beast with their projectile attacks, splitting up as Demolt took flight. He targeted Mika first, and his fearsome speed prompted her into teleporting. Frasmine and Christina punched rounds of fireballs and icicles, but with Demolt’s fist incoming, Frasmine skied and pulled Chris with him on his ice trail. “Perfect!” Zofis cheered, floating above the demon. “Nothing can stop him now! Demolt, destroy every last operative in this temple! Do whatever you need to!”

“Whatever I need… in that case.”

“AAAH-!” Zofis had no chance to react before Demolt leapt and snapped him in his mouth. The kids, repulsed by this shocking development, would begin evading a string of explosive bubbles spat by Demolt. However, Christina simply bent the resulting fire to her will, whirling her arms and punching large fireballs at his head. It did little to deter the beast as he charged and swiped his claw. He couldn’t pursue Christina further as Mika and Star combined barriers to push him back, the beast tearing it down after a few hits. Mika flashed her camera, and several blurry clones of herself splayed around him (this was from a slow shutter shot of herself rapidly teleporting around). Demolt figured the best option was to spit Burstballs everywhere, hoping he could at least blow up a few of the brats. However, the bystanders all fled the area as Demolt destroyed all the remaining pillars supporting the domed roof.

The roof, along with the Moon Stone came crumbling down onto Demolt. The operatives peeked up from the stairs, seeing some of the rubble shake. They ducked as the rubble suddenly blew apart, Demolt taking flight. He saw the kids on the stairs and shot down, the group scrambling downstairs, but Demolt’s impact caused them to crumble as the kids tumbled down. Demolt made a quick follow up and swung his fist their way, but Mika encased them all in a bubble that absorbed the blow and sent them falling down the building. “WHOA!” Kagura yelped. She and several ops saw the battle from the temple’s pavilion. “What’s that huge bat thing?!”

“Is that a Mamodo, too?” Nora wondered.

Demolt saw them all from his high vantage point and snarled. He lunged down, the onlookers taken aback by the sudden danger as they scrambled to evade his shockwave. Demolt spat Burstballs at them all, but Star would catch one in a portal to redirect into Demolt’s abs. Kagura dashed behind him and leapt up his back, jabbing her umbrella into his back before kicking up onto the head. Kagura grabbed one of his armored horns and used it as a vantage to kick him, hanging on as the beast violently swung his head. Eventually, Demolt swat her off, KOing the Yato, then he chose to look for an easy piece of meat: Erin looked pretty weak. Demolt leapt with a double hammer punch, Mika quickly pulling her skyward. The very act of targeting Erin fueled Nora with rage, the Adabatian leaping on his arm and lashing an extended Water Kick at his face. Demolt squashed her with his other hand, but had only applied medium force, whereas Nora combined the strength in her legs and her water to keep it raised.

Aria grabbed Karma and hurdled him into Demolt’s face, his strong leg dealing fair damage, but Demolt smacked him away for a knock-out, then flicked Nora off his arm. “Alright, shortstack,” Christina grabbed and aimed Laruta, “time for a little teamwork!”

“You could ask my consent before you do this next time!” Laruta blasted a combo of Gas Bombs at Demolt; though he barely felt the impacts, the stench left an impression on him. But when Christina’s fire was added to the gas, a great combustion enveloped the beast. Christina bolted with Laruta in hand, Demolt adamant to crush them, but Star saved them with a portal. The Zathurian stretched several Blocks around Demolt and burst them, the furious Mamodo flying to swat him, a successful blow this time as Star went flying.

“Now it’s my turn!” Mali belched her own string of Gas Bombs, drawing Demolt’s attention and running from his wrath. “Let me help you, Mali!” After he landed, Chuko breathed fire over the gassed beast and combusted him again, but Demolt slammed his tail in the ground beside her, sending Chuko flying into a wall and KOing her. Mika warped before Demolt’s face and flashed him again, blinding his view of the kids with the same glacier illusion.

“Mali, stand there for a second!” Veronica requested, her staff ready. “Make a gas cloud!” The child nodded and made some gas between Vern and Demolt. The witch bounced fireballs that would blow up in size from the gas, pelting Demolt with enough force to push him back. “ONE MORE TIME, LAR!” Christina bellowed. From their vantage above right cliff, she fired a straight stream of fire that Laruta amplified with gas, Demolt howling under the aggravating heat. The beast’s fists reignited with violet flames, punching the cliff and toppling the girls. Mika raised and saved them from Demolt’s clap, throwing them to the opposite cliff, but Demolt shot up and punched Mika away. She survived the burning with a brief barrier, but she was blown against the temple regardless and knocked out. (Play “The Strongest OST” from Gintama!)

Demolt spat Burstballs at Mali and Vern, who tried to flee, but were knocked down from the shockwave. He faced Chris and Lar and leapt for a direct punch, until a cluster of crescent moons redirected his focus. “DEMOLT!” He faced the temple entrance, finding Leila with a new aura of determination. “Leave my new friends alone…”

“Demomomo… Milordo thought you would betray us, Leila. But if you apologize now and kiss the ground we walk, perhaps we might forgive you…”

“Never! I’m not gonna be afraid of him, anymore… and I’m not afraid of you! I’m tired of fighting the Kids Next Door… but I’ve decided, I’m going to fight for them!”

“Peh. You’re not worth my time right now.”

“Why not? You aren’t scared of me, are you? Big bad Demolt scared of tiny little Leila. But why should I be scared of Milordo’s lapdog?”

“SO BE IT!” Demolt threw a punch her way, but it was blocked by a crescent shield combined by Leila and Tiffi’s chi. A Space Block form and burst by Demolt’s face, the beast watching as Star flew to warp Chris and Lar away.

They reappeared at the temple’s top building. “Hey, you’re okay!” Chris said.

“You can thank Erin.” The geek in question had rushed to heal him after Demolt’s attack. “Plus, Jason asked me to bring you up.”

“Chrissie!” Her sector captain raced over. “You feelin’ up for a Team Attack?”

“You sure you can pull it off in all this rain?”

“Hey, if you’re still flamin’, I’m still sunny!”

Leila threw a barrage of Moonerangs around Demolt, jabbing into his exposed areas, and when the beast dove his fangs down to gnash her, Tiffi grabbed and sprung them to the air. She fled from Demolt’s pursuit as both pelted him with crescents, but when the beast was on the verge of clasping them in his flaming hand, Isabelle soared by on a Song Road and whisked them to the sky. As they flowed with her rhythm, they had a better vantage in striking Demolt, but the flying demon’s speed was still bound to catch up. However, with swift and sudden maneuvering, Isabelle dove down, back, and began to loop around Demolt to tie him in a colorful music sheet. Once done, Isabelle kept the flow going at a slanted path toward the temple. Demolt had only struggled for a moment before pursuing. “?!”

The rain showed no signs of stopping, yet to his confusion, a great light brimmed in the air above him. Star had provided a Block stairway for Chris and Jason to run up. The two took a great dive once Demolt was flying into position, their fists parallel as a great one of fire, encased in a Light Sphere, fell like a comet. Unable to resist the challenge, Demolt flew, his violet fist set to impact theirs. “SUNNY METEOR!” However, they curved their attack to go around Demolt’s fist and smash him in the face, and Jason grabbed Christina, spun his tail, and carried them away from Demolt’s fist.

“HYAAAAH!” Perry glided above before dropping, sword aimed straight down. He stabbed through the Sunny Meteor and directly into Demolt’s unarmored forehead. Tiffi had jumped up with Leila and threw the latter higher, allowing her to slam a sequence of moons against Perry’s hilt, until the sword was lodged all the way through Demolt’s skull.

“AAAAHH…uuuaaaaaggg…” The demon flailed about the air while the kids had already fallen back to land. He could feel his brain giving out and his bodily functions leaving him. “Mmm-mm…BLUAH!” He barfed a saliva-covered Milordo-Z down to the surface.

“AAAAGH!” The lord sprung up in a rage. “If you EVER do that again, I’M GONNA…eh?” Only then did he noticed the shadow cast over him, and the demon’s dead corpse plummeting. “AAAHH-”

Zofis was crushed flat beneath his greatest warrior. Only his head was visible from beneath the armpit, agape and unconscious. (End song.)

A tired Perry limped up and drew the Gilded Sword out of Demolt’s head. The blood would be washed away by the rain. The Supreme Leader addressed all the operatives present. Several more had come up the valley path, alongside the Mamodo. Both sides were bruised, dirty, and tired. Erujo had a big dirt footprint stamped over his head. Ralph was supporting a hanging Hyde, the chubby boy delighted to learn the outcome of the battle. It seemed that Max and Victoream had fused into some kind of hybrid “M” and “V,” a result that filled them with misery and regret.

Erin was working to heal all the kids knocked out by Demolt. She knew she would have to give the same treatment to her friends… but she felt just as much urgency and sympathy for the Mamodo. With Perry’s nod of approval, the spectacled girl proceeded to heal them as well.

“I see everything has worked out.” Dr. Riddles walked out of the temple. “Now, if someone would be kind enough to help carry my Moon Stone back to my museum. I’ll throw a fun party for you if you do!”

“Who’s this geezer?” Rudy asked.

“I dunno,” Snap replied, “I just want this rain to stop so I don’t melt my dust off!”

“There, it’s in here! Just like I said!” Zofis hissed, dragged by Star into the natural hangar where his ship was parked. “Happy now?!”

The lord had been chained in chi-blocks and “coerced” into “willingly” cooperating with the KND’s investigation. Star and Zofis entered the ship in time to see the terminal beep. “Huh? Someone’s calling you.” He walked to press the button.

“No, don’t, don’t answer!” Zofis panicked.

Star took that as a cue to answer, anyway. The TV brought up the silhouette of a tentacled being, Star tensing up in caution. “Hm? Zofis, what’s going on over there?!”

“Uhhh…there’s been a slight problem, My Lord. Th-The KND, uh…”

“We’ve defeated his Mamodo and have taken Zofis into our custody. You…you’re Emperor Vilgax, aren’t you? I’ve seen you on the news.”

“And you’re the KND’s leader, aren’t you? Gaxaxaxax…your troops held up against my soldiers quite well.”

“So, that’s why those aliens were attacking us. You didn’t want us to bring backup to Earth.”

“Yes, it was that imbecile’s request that we make his invasion a little easier. But it seems, even after delaying your arrival, the remaining operatives there were too much for his army to handle. You have failed us, Zofis.”

“No, I haven’t! The operatives, they’re all exhausted! You can send a small squadron and wipe them out easy! We can still carry on with the plan!”

“Gaxaxaxax! Save your pleas. Kids Next Door, I’ll let you have your victory. I’ve no interest in conquering that world, yet. You can decide what to do with that incompetent underling.”

“W-wait! Can’t you ask my father first?! Maybe he’ll…”

“You’ve used up your last request, Zofis! As for those satellites, we’ll be withdrawing them as well. But mark my words, Kids Next Door… Stand in my way any more, and you will suffer the consequences!”

The transmission ended, leaving Zofis distraught and more pale than he was.
“No… this is the end… I’m gonna die on this insolent planet…”

“Nah.” Star said. “We’ll let you live with your crimes first. So, let’s see to that party we were promised!”

I wondered why Star was just hanging up there, but it makes sense that he'd be taking care of events, whilst also reserving himself for the final boss.

Dang, so I guess they've done a lot more research on the GKND, and the Winkiebottoms, than I thought. But either way, the effect is still the same.

Poor Leila, she's really had a rough go of it. But thankfully, Perry's here to help bring her out of her trauma. Speaking of which, I wonder if Zofis' power where to mix with a Darkness Cannon, seeing as trauma like that could help amplify the effects?

So, I see that the Mamodo, took a page out of Eternia's book and cloaked their own planet too! But still, if he was ejected with his family, then did he leave them for whoever he's being cared for now? Seeings as its not Vilgax. XP

Lol, I'm still amazed that Earth's galaxy still ain't catching up with the rest of the universe. Even more so, given that the most famous KND sectors are mostly from there. But I guess they can't really do much, given that they've only got Earth as their only bustling planet, compared to places like Galaxia or Florae. Alternatively, I guess it would be somewhat peaceful since all the other planets don't really have any threats on them.

Hmm, wonder what's up with all this business about the parents disappearing? I suspect it must be related to those portals and the Demon Lords, maybe some are being used by them for the upcoming demon invasion. I thought at first maybe MaKayla got scooped up by the Phoenios, but then she'd leave a body so she'd have been labelled as dead. XD But, if this is related to the demons, then does this means that Nebula might be disappearing soon? 8O

Also, LOL, parents disappearing but Perry doesn't think its a problem??? I mean, its fine if they just come back and they had no idea where they were. But people are going MISSING, maybe its just the phrasing, but like WTF?! XDDD

Whelp, hopefully Gorm will now find some peace in the Spirit World since he doesn't seem too bad. Plus, he doesn't hold too much of a grudge against Dimentia, if he sees her up there! XP

Well now, I guess Perry is getting his first kill a lot sooner than I expected, though not with the person who I though it would be. But given that Zofis might have more info, it makes sense that he won't get offed, especially now that he's been properly defeated.

So it seems that Vilgax still ain't completely gunning for the KND, an arrogant mistake on his part, given what their parents have accomplished, thus the same can be said for their kids!
